February Birthstone

The traditional February Birthstone is Amethyst. It is said to represent sincerity and security, spirituality and contentment. The name Amethyst derives from the Greek word, ametusthis. This means non-inebriated.

Amethyst belongs to the quartz group of minerals. Its natural colour ranges from dark violet to pale lavender. Amethyst is widely heat treaded. This can either make the purple shades more intense, or give a green or pink hue to the gemstone.

Mythology of amethyst

In ancient times amethyst was used to guard against over indulging in alcohol. Amethyst was, as a result, highly prized.

The gemstones rich colour is associated with royalty, dark shades being found in the Crown Jewels. It was said to be the favourite stone of Catherine the Great of Russia.
