January Birthstone
January Birthstone
The January Birthstone is Garnet. There are nine varieties of Garnet, but the use in jewellery tends to be mainly Rhodolite, Spespertite, Hessonite and Grossularite.
Mythology of Garnets
Garnet has been widely regarded as a talisman since ancient times. It has been widely regarded throughout ancient Rome and Greece, and also throughout Sumaria, Sweden and Europe throughout the Middle Ages.
Warriors in the Middle Ages had Garnets set into their shields and sword hilts. This was thought to protect them from injury in battle. Many beautiful examples of the can be widely seen in Museums. One of the finest finds of examples of Anglo-Saxon examples was the Staffordshire Hoard. This was found in Hammerwich in 2009. Amulets were worn to bring luck and wealth to the wearer.
It has been used in jewellery in Egypt for over 5000 years.
